Where did Heather Newcom and Laura Karch meet?
HN: We met at Project Walk in 2002. We both had personal experiences with neurological disorders and spinal cord injuries. We began talking and, knowing the values that we shared, the only logical step was to create a business together to promote what we believed in.
What separates Awakenings Health Institute from other programs?
We both believe in a holistic approach to living. It is about keeping a balance in life through the choices we make. We also wanted to create an environment that is fun, motivating and allows us to give personal attention to our clients.
Is recovery different for everybody? What is the first step towards rehabilitation/recovery? What is Recovery?
“Recovery” means different things to various people. At AHI, we keep our definition of “recovery” fluid in order to meet the needs our diverse clientele. No one can tell you what your definition of recovery is. It is our intention to help you achieve your goals, whatever they may be.
Why is psychology important?
In order to achieve your physical goals it is important to examine the mental and emotional aspects of our well being. All great athletes and peak performers know the value of having a good coach help them see their blind spots or mental limitations. Once our "head and heart is in the game" we can utilize all of our resources to achieving our goals and dreams. Dr. Biggs and Dr. Starks bring their own unique approach to helping you identify your goals and create a game plan for realization.
Why is nutrition important?
Proper nutrition requires a commitment to promote improved longterm health. Some of the benefits of proper nutrition may include: lowering your risk for premature death and the development of some forms of cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, respiratory illness, pressure sores, urinary tract infection and urinary stones; decrease feelings of anxiety, improve muscle strength, endurance, self image, and your ability to fall asleep and to sleep well; and manage your muscle spasms, chronic pain and bowel program.
How is acupuncture beneficial?
Acupuncture promotes rehabilitation by stimulating areas of the body that have lost the ability to function due to injury, as well as increasing existing function. In addition, due to the intense nature of the workouts at AHI, acupuncture increases the resiliency of the body, maximizing the training potential. Overall, it helps maintain balanced circulation throughout the body, which is vital for good health and overall performance.
Why is massage important?
Massage Therapy is offered at Awakenings Health Institute because of the many health benefits that are received through touch. Of these many benefits, there are a few that are specifically helpful when dealing with an SCI. These include: improved coordination, increased mind/body connection, decrease excessive muscle spasms, improved circulation, increase in sensation, decrease in aches and pains, and decrease in nerve pain. The massage treatment room offers the opportunity to work on the body while relaxing the mind. Physical and mental relaxation are essential in order to meet the demands of the intense and vigorous workouts at AHI.
What are the benefits of wheatgrass?
Wheatgrass is a source of chlorophyll that maybe used as a nutritional supplement. Wheatgrass is high in magnesium and enzymes, which have been shown to enhance to body’s immune system. It also has strong antiseptic benefits. There have also been studies that support the idea that wheatgrass may be beneficial in detoxifying the body from internal and external pollutants. Wheatgrass can also increase the hemoglobin production in the body, which may benefit blood disorders and increase capillary function. It is a body cleanser, re-builder and neutralizer of toxins.
What is the Power Plate?
This machine has been developed to vibrate in three different planes: up/down, front/back, and side/side. The Power Plate has been used to strengthen muscles without overstraining joints. It increases blood circulation to help bring oxygen to areas of inflammation and promote healing. It has an effect on enhanced metabolism, improves bone mineral density, reduces the stress hormone cortisol, which leads to inflammation, and improves lymphatic circulation, which contributes to a strong immune system.
Why do you have so many modalities available?
We have noticed that the body is best when it is not in a set pattern. The body/nervous system gradually becomes accustom to repetition, which is why it is critical to constantly change up exercises, therapies, schedules, temperatures, etc. Change is good! If the body/nervous system settles into a routine, the body will fall into plateau.
Why is rest and recovery important?
In anything you do, there needs to be balance to be effective over a long period. Nothing in nature is one way all the time. For this very reason, it is of utmost importance to allow your body to rest and recover between workouts. Without respecting this principle, you will be unable to make gains over the long haul. By giving your body ample time to rest between workouts, and seeking out ways to help it rejuvenate, you will be able to avoid burnout and plateaus.
Why is it important to take responsibility for my recovery and health?
No one can help you recover but you. The more you know about yourself and your body, the better chance you have to recover. If you are aware of your patterns, mental and physical, you can begin to become more clear about what works for your body.
Why is it important for my caregiver/family members to take care of themselves?
One of the vital ingredients to recovery is a strong support system. If those around you are healthy and strong, it will only enhance your recovery. During these stressful times, those around you need to be extra vigilant about their own health.
What organization do you recommend getting involved with?
Established in 1997, the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) is a unique organization that recognizes the athletic greatness inherent in all people with physical challenges and supports their athletic endeavors by providing grants for training, competition, and equipment needs.
